The top scorer for Norwich City, Borja Sainz, has been suspended for six matches after admitting to spitting at Sunderland's Chris Mepham in December.
The Championship's leading scorer has also been fined £12,000 by the Football Association for the incident which occurred in the 74th minute of Norwich's 2-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light.
The Spaniard, who has scored 16 goals for the Canaries this season but has not added to that tally since November, expressed his remorse for his actions.
Sainz stated, "Spitting at an opponent is completely out of character for me, and my reaction in that moment was unacceptable. I want to apologize directly to Chris Mepham and extend my apologies to my team-mates, coaching staff, and fans. I am deeply disappointed in myself for letting everyone down."
Borja Sainz's suspension and fine serve as a reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and fair play in football. It is crucial for players to conduct themselves with respect and integrity both on and off the field.
